Long days, easy tee times

July means long evenings — twilight tee times stretch out nicely, and it's one of the best windows of the summer to get out with family and friends. Mid-week mornings are still wide open too, if you'd rather beat the holiday crowds.

We sent a drone up over Silver Spring this week to see the whole course from the air — and from up there it's just as clear as it is standing on the first tee. The greens are still incredible.

You can see the entire layout settle into the tree line, the fairways running full and green, and Narragansett Bay off in the distance. For a community course run by volunteers, it's a pretty good-looking patch of Riverside from a few hundred feet up.

Still rolling true

Nothing's changed where it counts. The greens are holding the same tight, true surfaces they've had all season — the same quiet, steady work from Jimmy and the crew that keeps them that way. The summer color is full, the fairways are strong, and the course is genuinely worth showing off right now.

Better from ground level

The view from above is nice, but the greens are even better underfoot. Mid-week mornings are still wide open, twilight is the move on weekends, and walk-on rounds are easy. If you've been meaning to get out, the course won't be in better shape than it is right now.

The greens were great, as usual. Overhead, the clouds looked like marshmallows drifting across the sky, and a nice breeze kept the day comfortable from the first tee to the last putt. It was the kind of day that reminds us why a round of golf is such a good way to spend time together.

The fairways looked strong, the greens rolled well, and the whole course had that easy early-summer feel. Thank you to every father, grandfather, son, daughter, and family who chose to spend part of the day with us.

The greens were starting to get fast. After a dry stretch the surfaces had quickened up and firmed off — fun if you were rolling it well, a little unforgiving if you weren't — and we were keeping a close eye on them. Then the little bit of rain we got last night was exactly what we needed. Just enough to take the edge off, soften them back to true, and set the whole place up perfectly. Honestly, you couldn't have asked for a better day out here.

That's the thing about a little overnight rain in June — it does in one night what a week of hand-watering chases. The greens drank it right up. By morning the surfaces had calmed down, the roll was back to true without losing any of their pace, and that deep summer color came up even richer. Jimmy and the crew had things dialed before the dry stretch ever got ahead of them, and the rain just put a bow on it.

How the course is reading today

Greens are right where you want them — quick enough to keep you honest, soft enough to take a good putt cleanly. Hole 5 and Hole 6 are both rolling beautifully again, and a few of the back-nine surfaces are right there with them. Fairways are full, the rough is up just enough to make you think about your line, and there isn't a wet, soggy step anywhere. The rain was the right amount at the right time.

Hole 6 is still the one to see

Hole 6 looked as good today as it has all season — that clubhouse-view green came up bright and clean after the rain, and putts that should drop were dropping. If you want a quick read on how a course is doing in mid-June, it's a green like that: firm, true, and holding its line a full week after the last update.

We're a stretch away from the longest day of the year, which means twilight at Silver Spring is a real round now — you can tee off after work and still finish nine in good light. If you haven't taken advantage of that yet this season, this is the week to start.

We took a walk around Silver Spring today and the course is reading the room. Early summer in Riverside, blue sky, a little breeze coming through — and the greens, honestly, are the best they've looked in a while. Putts are rolling true, the surfaces are tight without being thin, and you can hear the mower humming a few fairways over because the grounds work hasn't stopped.

Jimmy was out there doing his thing on a green when we walked up. If you've played here more than a few times, you know him — head down, machine running, no shortcut on the work. Half the reason these greens are in the shape they're in right now is that someone is on them constantly, paying attention, not letting anything drift.

What you'll see this week

The greens. They're rolling well end to end. Hole 5 in particular was holding a bright, even surface that takes a putt cleanly — long lag putts were finishing right where you'd expect them to. Hole 6 was the same story. If you've been waiting for the right week to bring a guest, this is it.
